Johnny Dikeman wishes you good casting

I saw this on a non-fly-fishing blog (I guess I didn’t realize those existed until now) and thought some of you might enjoy stepping back into the Way-Back Machine for 4 minutes and 40 seconds. I know it was good for me. The music behind this is sensational. Johnny Dikeman wishes you good casting! And so do I.

Oh my goodness I had to have a laugh at this, but as a casting instructor I want to point out that as soon as Johnny switches to his “competition form” he no longer uses the “clock system” which is pretty much the central theme of my casting instruction book “Learn to Fly-Cast in a weekend”. Perhaps this is where that infernal “Clock System” started but for any beginners watching the first part of this video clip, please please please don’t use the clock system, it will haunt you for the rest of your days. I wonder what that rod would be rated at today? 000000 weight? 🙂

  2. Too late for me, I’m afraid, to ever be a really good caster… you all go one without me.

  3. Thanks for sharing this demo from the archives. Soundtrack? Not sure I’d call it “sensational”. It’s the same one I hear that drives me to The Mars Volta!

  4. Oh, I think the music is terrifically hilarious–trying to paint so many moods and flavors into what is really a very short and simple piece. The woodwinds evoking the mystery of the multi-angle slo-mo footage, the brass and strings thrilling to Johnny’s championship form, and the whole ensemble (with harp!) swelling to the saccharine, feel-great crescendo. Mmm, campy!
